LESSON PLAN THREE - ORAL HISTORIES SHOW MORE THAN EMOTION

Stuart Wechsler

Ruth Turner

Listen to Stuart Wechsler and Ruth Turner discuss their decision to join the civil rights movement. Have students write a letter to their parents justifying their decision to leave school to join the black freedom movement.

Participants should:

1. Outline the movement cause and tactic

2. Explain its transition to black power

3. Discuss their decision to follow a particular strategy (i.e. community organization or direct action)

4. Address parental fears about their educational and career future.
