Foundation and Government Funding

You just learned a new skill-- grant writing!  At first, you were not very good at it, but the Stokes administration conducted training workshops to help you.  Nonetheless, some members are livid that you chose to receive government and foundation help!  They support economic development but wish to raise money from the black community only.  Additionally, they fear that foundations and local or federal governments will use money to manipulate CORE’s leadership and mission.  They also argue that this dependence could undermine CORE’s financial stability long term should foundations or the government suddenly withdraw financial support.

Sonny Carson, chapter leader for Brooklyn CORE and other Northeast CORE chapters also opposed this decision.  They broke away from National CORE at the 1968 annual convention.

YES! -You decide to seek outside funding despite member opposition.  Economic development must occur somehow.

NO! - You change your mind and join Sonny Carson and his members in the walk out.  There must be a better option than depending on an untrustworthy partner.
